The Serengeti plain presents a stunning landscape for my camera lens, from grey-powdered dust devils that whirl across the wide porini floor to the colors and textures that provide the backdrop for a disappearing species, wildlife migration, or solo Maasai cattle herder guiding his livestock.  An image is recorded in a fraction of a second but savored and shared by many for all time.  As I walk across the airfield, cherished friends exchange excited greetings with me, our conversations in Kiswahili begin, and our stories of the past year’s tribulations and small triumphs avalanche.

In recent years, the people’s lives have come into sharper focus.  Visits to the newly established women’s dairy cooperative, the brim-filled orphanage for street children, and the mission school for Maasai girls are the reminders that education, health, housing, food and clean water are vectors for a productive healthy life.  My foundation LifeWaterAfrica.org, bringing water filtration to villagers, is a small way of honoring those who deserve clean water.

Why am I drawn back to Africa time and again?  Is it the recognized fragility of life?  The boldness of the wildlife stage? Or, the comforting solitude of friends circling a fire, a sunset behind baobab trees, or the children’s excited chatter and eager stares?  It is all of these things.  Though you may never travel to Africa, my programs do challenge you to find your passion – and go for it!”
