Lesson Plan for one hour presentation

Part One - Selected students dress up as: Maasai girl/boy (different from us), youth in dashiki style shirt (somewhat similar to us), student dressed in tee shirt and jeans (identical to us).

Objective:              • To present some artifacts and type of dress of the Maasai.

    • To illustrate the similarities and differences in styles among cultures.

Segue into asking students to note the similarities and differences in pictures shown in slide program.

Part Two - Fast paced slides coupled with narrative.

Objective:              • Geography  - variety of landscape and animal habitat, weather.  

    • Culture - breadth of languages, tribes, values, lifestyle, clothing, daily activities, food.  Specifically note:                               hunter/gatherers, herdsman, agrarians, city dwellers.

    • Wildlife - Variety of animals.  Size, speed, numbers, habitat, food sources, myths.  Predator vs. prey.  Importance of           observation for physical description of animal and behavior.  Need to read multiple books on particular animals to               gather accurate information on animal behavior.

    • Role of humanitarian service projects.  Collection of used soccer uniforms for distribution to Tanzanian youth.                    Construction and delivery of biosand water filters to villagers through LifeWaterAfrica.org.

    • Final slides highlight my passion for this place and set stage for q &a.

Part Three – Question and answer.

Objective:  To initiate in depth conversation and reinforcement of concepts presented in slide program. 

•   What are similar activities, styles, structures that you saw in slide program?  Where did you see differences? 

•   What type of technology do we have that would be most useful to Africans?

•   Problems facing African children.

•   Animal behavior and appearance.

•   Use of digital photography to document activities and capture the expression of culture and individuals.

•   Reinforce that the efforts of one in collaboration with others can make a huge difference in the life of others.
